Chur - the oldest City of Switzerland
Chur has a history of human settlement reaching back over 5,000 years and is therefore the oldest city in Switzerland. With a population of approximately 35,000, it is also the capital of the holiday canton of Grisons. Chur is also the only Swiss city with its own summer and winter sports region called Brambruesch, which lies 1,100 to 2,176 metres above sea level. The local mountain Dreibuendenstein is reachable by gondola straight from the historical part of the city. Due to its favoured location, Chur enjoys sunshine even when other Swiss cities are covered in fog.
The historical part of the city, now one of the largest pedestrian zones in Switzerland, is pretty and well preserved. There are numerous restaurants offering a wide variety of local specialities and wines from the nearest boutique wine region, the Buendner Herrschaft, which features a few notable Pinot Noirs. Night owls get their money’s worth in the vicinity of the old part of town called Untere Gasse and Welschdörfli. Heidi and Peter at a picnic in the region «Heidiland».
